Now and then we find it a requirement to set a hole as a datum and locate additional features off that entity. I generally create a datum axis, give it a datum name (i.e.: A), change the properties to a [-A-] and so on.


All the in-house books and our training manuals depict a datum that is attached to the leader line of the diameter callout. When I try this, by using properties and pacing the datum to a dimension, the little solid triangle remains adhered to the axis.


What am I missing?

I do that all the time & it works fine for me. Check your drawing .dtl file settings.

gtol_datums std_iso_jis
new_iso_set_datums yes
 
I guess what I meant to specify was attaching the datum to the elbow of the dimension leader. So the datum is right next to the actual dim.
