Create a datum point array and make a pipe feature through the points. For a toroid like the one shown you will need 4 points per turn. Alternatively, for a round section one you could write an equation for a datum curve and sweep along it.
The secret is to create the points on a cylindical co-ordinate system.
That way you are dealing with a predictably incrementing angle, only two
radii, and only two z elevations.
When you create the pipe, use a
constant radius and drive it through the complete array rather than picking points one at a time.
