Formed parts

If I'm making a formed part, i.e. it can't be unbent into a flat pattern, is there any reason to do it in sheetmetal?

I realize I could use the form tool if I wanted to, but aside from that, is there any benefit to using the sheetmetal app instead of a shelled solid?

Scott,

Some parts are more easyly done in sheetmetal than any other way (see attached picture). Also if you need to add other sheetmetal features, besides the form, there is no alternative. Doing parts the "sheetmetal way", like the added part, is also closer to the real life situation : cut - then bend.

The way to get the flat pattern is to create a FamTab with the form feature excluded.

Is there a tutorial on creating a fam tab to flatten punch features? I am in the same situation where my flat state is ignoring a form.
