copy geometry and external copy geometry

As far as I am aware:


Copy geometry needs all the components to be in one assembly - the reference will fail if the original model is deleted from the assembly. This is therefor only available in assemblies


External Copy Geometry allows you to use information from another model without having it in an assembly - ie copy surface profiles or hole locations, etc into a part or assembly from any other part, skeleton or assembly.
 
I know the functions of copy geometry and external copy geometry in assemble. But please differentiate the use in assemble with some example.
