Solid blend will not unbend

I've made a solid model of a 10" DIA x 8" DIA x 8" DIA wye. I've cut it down to leave only one side of the wye that is transition from half of the 10" side to 8" transition that I made as a blend. After I convert it to sheet metal, it will not unbend or make a flat pattern.

Any help would be appreciated. The geometry is hard to describe, I can e-mail the part file if you want to see it.

Thanks,

Simpler case:

Made a solid blend as follows: 1st section is half of an oval, 2nd section is a half circle (radius smaller than minor radius of the oval).

Shell it resulting in half of a thin oval to circle transition.

Convert to sheet metal.

Will not unbend or make flat pattern.

By the way, the above procedure works fine if the oval is replaced with a half circle that is larger than the other circle section (resulting in a thin wall half cone). Can anybody help me around the problem of flattening a blend from an oval to a circle?
