I've been using S.W. for about 5 months. I could use a good explanation, or (preferably) source, on how parts, assemblies ..etc. reference each other, or "link" as acoworker phrases it. I dont know when to save as, save as copy, or when not to.
 
If you're in an assembly and you sketch on one component and use an edge of another component - you've just linked those two components together. Is this what you're looking for. This is nota bad thing, if you understand how to break the relationship between the two (if you don't want the relationship).


In the assembly, you also have assebmly level references. These are usally mating conditions and don't effect the part itself.
