Memory usage

New member
I recently tried the 3GB switch, on a 4GB Tristar machine, following the microsoft instructions. The machine does work better but my task manager shows physical memory usage about 1GB. Is there a way to see how much memory I'm actually using or is the task manager correct?

Hey mjenkins,

What version of ProE are you using (pre-Wildfire, Wildfire 1, Wildfire 2,...etc.). If you have a version prior to Wildfire 2.0 you must perform certain steps to make the ProE application large address aware. As of Wildfire 2.0 you do not have to patch using IMAGECFG so disregard this in the report below. Take a look at this TPI report from PTC. The TPI report is #111330. The TAN article described in the "
Related Issues" section below (TAN #131021) is related to a problem with IE resulting from applying this TPI report. If you need it Private Message me.

dojo posted the TPI report previously (I would recommend looking at all the posts in the thread), see:

Notice this section for further monitoring of the xtop.exe process:

"For an accurate measurement, monitor the xtop.exe process Virtual Bytes
counter with the Windows Perforamance Monitor (perfmon.exe)."

Hope this helps.

One thing to watch for when using the /3GB switch is the amount of memory that the system is using. We are also using the USERA=2900 switch, which allocates 1.1GB to the system and only 2.9GB to the user applications.

I haven't had any issues with ProE closing out or giving me errors. It just appears to be using less than 1GB of the available 3GB.??

I'm just hoping tomaximizethe performanceof my hardware.

I really appreciate the help!

Hey all-

I had some requests to provide some instructions on how to utilize perfmon.exe to monitor the xtop.exe virtual bytes. To illustrate the proper technique I have used the Camtasia recorder (I was looking for an excuse to use it, but this procedure is probably best left for video rather than trying to explain all the steps). This is my first time using this tool so I do not know how successful it will be. If anyone views this and has any suggestions on what settings (resolutions, file format,...etc.), please Private Message me.

The WMV file is located here (old school account):
<a href="http://tools.ecn.purdue.edu/%7Ecook5/pub/xtop_perfmon3.wmv" target="_blank" target="_blank">
http://tools.ecn.purdue.edu/~cook5/pub/xtop_perfmon3.wmv</a>

If the video will not play, you may need the TechSmith screen capture codec (free) found here:

http://www.techsmith.com/download/codecs.asp

A few points regarding this video:

1. You must have ProE open before you attempt to add a counter to watch the virtual bytes consumed by the xtop.exe process.

2. At the end, I show how to appropriately save the MS management console so you do not have to reperform the steps to create a process counter. All you do is simply double-click the file where you save it and all the settings will be intact. If you do not save the management console window, you have to recreate it after you close it.

3. I recorded this video at 800x600. It plays fine at 1280x1024. I don't know if this is helpful to anyone.

4. The purpose of the scaling the plot (under "Data" tab->"Scale:" drop-down box) is becuase the vertical scale can only contain a max number of 9 digits. Therefore, if you need to see 1GB of virtual memory you need to scale the vertical axis to .1 and set the maximum value of the vertical axis (under the "Graph" tab) to 100000000. This represents 1 GB of virtual memory.

Hope this helps.
